Some medications
and vitamin preparations may contain a small amount of lactose. Generally, the amount is very small and is
tolerated well.
½ cup milk (whole,
skim, 1 percent, 2 percent, buttermilk, sweet acidophilus)
1/8 cup powdered
dry milk (whole, nonfat, buttermilk – before reconstituting)
¼ cup evaporated
milk
3 Tbsp sweetened
condensed milk
¾ cup heavy cream
½ cup sour cream
½ cup white sauce
½ cup party chip
dip or potato topping
¾ cup creamed or
low fat cottage cheese
1 cup dry cottage
cheese
¾ cup ricotta

or cheese spread (whey and/or dry milk solids may be added to these cheeses)

Special commercially prepared low lactose foods, including ice cream and cottage cheese, are available in some supermarkets and in some areas.
Lactase enzyme is available as Lactaid and may be
added to the milk 24 hours in advance of ingestion. A tablet form is available that can be ingested just prior to
eating a meal that contains lactose.
Depending on the degree of intolerance, ½ to 3 tablets may be used.
