Anti-Reflux Measures

                                                                                                                                               BACK

These instructions are designed to provide you with information that will aid in alleviating the symptoms associated with reflux disease.  It is important that you comply with these instructions.  If you are unable to follow these guidelines, please let us know.

1.      Elevate the head of your bed six (6) inches.  Using cans filled with sand or gravel, bricks, or boards can do this most economically.  DO NOT elevate your body on pillows.  Elevating your body with pillows increases intra-abdominal pressure.  You may use a foam wedge if you have a waterbed, but it is recommended that you get rid of your waterbed.

2.      Try to avoid eating after 6:00 p.m.  This measure will insure that you have an empty stomach when you go to sleep.  Most of the damage from acid reflux occurs at night when you are laying down.  Do not lie down for at least one hour after meals.

3.      Avoid certain foods and beverages, such as coffee in any form, caffeine containing beverages (teas and sodas), peppermint, chocolate, fatty, greasy, or highly seasoned foods, alcohol, citrus fruits and juices, and tomato products.

4.      Avoid tight clothing or belts, which may increase abdominal pressure.

5.      Avoid nicotine.  Quit smoking or cut down as much as possible.  This measure is extremely important.

6.      Take an extra-strength antacid such as MYLANTA II, RIOPAN PLUS, MAALOX THERAPEUTIC CONCENTRATE or ALTERNAGEL.  (Alternagel is not as diarrhea causing as the other products.)  The antacid should be taken as follows: Two (2) Tablespoons one (1) hour after meals, and at bedtime.  The antacids can also be taken between scheduled times as needed if you continue to have symptoms of heartburns, indigestion, or substernal pain.  If you develop diarrhea or your stools become too loose, switch to ALTERNAGEL, as mentioned above.
